Why a Cashmere Scarf Is The Winter Accessory You Should Invest In

As winter sets in, you’ll want to bundle yourself in cosy clothing. So wouldn’t it be lovely to have a gorgeous cashmere scarf to reach for? It feels soft against your neck, warms you the moment you wrap it, and somehow works with everything you own. If you choose well, it'll be the same scarf you wear next winter, and the one after that.

That's the best part of a cashmere scarf - it’s not just a seasonal trend, but rather a considered piece you buy once and wear for years.

Here's what makes it worth the investment, and how to choose one that’ll last.

Warmth without the weight

Cashmere comes from the soft undercoat of the cashmere goat found in the region from northern China into Mongolia. Their downy fleece keeps the goats warm through harsh mountain winters as cold as -40°C. This cold climate and hearty lifestyle of the animals produce the longest, finest, softest fibres which are some of the best cashmere in the world. They're precious, too. A sheep can produce around 1 to 13kg of wool a year, while a cashmere goat gives only about 150 to 250 grams of cashmere.

Finer fibres trap more still air close to your skin, which is why a cashmere scarf feels so warm for how little it weighs. You get the cosiness of a heavy winter scarf without the heft. It's also why our cashmere scarves are deliberately compact. Rather than metres of fabric that you need to wrap round and round, they're proportioned to sit neatly beneath the lapel of a coat or the collar of a jacket. So you get the extra layer of warmth you need without it feeling bulky.

Cashmere, silk or wool - which should you choose for winter?

Wool is hard-wearing and offers dependable warmth, making it a familiar choice for winter. Depending on the fibre and weave, it can feel a little scratchy against bare skin or add bulk. Cashmere’s finer fibres feel soft and light, making it an easy choice with a cable knit at the weekend or a tailored coat for work on Monday.

And silk? We love silk! It deserves a place in your winter wardrobe, too. Light, breathable and comfortable against the skin, a silk scarf adds a gentle layer of warmth without feeling too warm indoors. Wear it with a jumper, blouse or jacket for a refined finishing touch, or tuck it beneath your coat when heading out. For days spent moving between the chilly outdoors and heated indoor spaces, it’s a particularly useful companion.

Cashmere is ideal when you want extra warmth on colder days, while silk offers a lighter layer you can comfortably keep on throughout the day. You can also wear the two together, pairing a silk neck scarf with a cashmere scarf over your coat. For a blend of these natural fibres, our Tiger Reverie Scarf combines cashmere, silk and wool for lightweight warmth that’s perfect for layering.

A worthwhile investment

When it comes to a cashmere scarf, a little care is needed. Such a fine fibre can pill if it rubs against a bag strap or coat collar, and a gentle cashmere comb lifts those little bobbles away easily.

Beyond that, looking after it is simple. Hand wash (only once or twice a season), store it folded rather than hung so it keeps its shape, and give it a day's rest between wears. Treated well, luxury cashmere scarves stay soft and beautiful for years, and the cost of each wear falls with every winter you wrap it on.

FAQs

Is cashmere worth the investment?

Yes, it’s ideal to wear during the colder months. A well-made cashmere scarf is warm, light and versatile enough for everyday wear, and with simple care it lasts for many winters, so the cost of each wear keeps falling.

What's the warmest luxury scarf for winter?

For everyday wear, cashmere is hard to beat. Its fine fibres hold warmth close to the skin with very little weight, so you stay cosy without a bulky layer around your neck.

Cashmere vs silk scarf: which is better for winter?

For warmth, cashmere. Silk is lovely for milder days and indoor layering, while cashmere is made for the cold. A silk-blended cashmere scarf offers a little of both.
